For my documentary script, I want to explore the existence of the philosophical attitude of existentialism in films. As of now, the four films I would possibly want to examine are The Seventh Seal, The Matrix, Apocalypse Now and the Network (other possible options include Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Being John Malkovich, American Beauty, The Truman Show, Memento, Fight Club, The Third Man, and Groundhog Day). Each movie is from a different genre, including magical realism, science fiction, drama, and “dark” comedy. I will compare how each film uses film techniques to expose the existential themes. For example, some of the characteristics of existentialism I want to define are that existence precedes essence, there is no God or pre-determined destiny, life is absurd and struggle is futile, decisions allow humans to give life meaning, and that individuals are free and responsible for their own actions. Other characteristics of existentialism in film may include characters going through an existential crisis and the presence of themes that cause the audience to question their own reality and existence on Earth. In addition, I may also mention the implication that world affairs such as the Cold War, and the Vietnam War have on the creation of movies such as The Seventh Seal and Apocalypse Now. This is my starting point and I hope to continue to research to narrow down specific elements of my script.
